今天我在审校一份技术视频文件时，看到了下面这句话：“And these will be ships in the night,so my red can't talk to my green.”

原译文为：这些过程会在夜间进行，所以红色基础设施与绿色基础设施之间不能相互通信。看到译文我很疑惑，“这些过程”是什么过程？为什么在夜间进行就导致后两者无法通信？如果“这些过程”对通信有抑制作用，是不是只有夜间无法通信，而不是整体上都无法通信？
带着这样的疑问，我再听了一遍视频，认为这里翻译理解有误。读者可以参考下面的屏幕截图：
这是关于宏分段的一个拓扑图，演示者构建了三个虚拟网络（VN）：基础设施VN（左，蓝色图标）、园区VN（中，绿色图标）和访客VN（右，红色图标）。这三个VN 之间彼此独立，无法相互通信，而各个VN 内部可以通过分组和策略进行微分段，进一步控制通信。
结合视频屏幕上的内容和上下文（What Idecided to do was to go ahead and create a new VN. So a new macro-segmentation c o n t a i n e r, a . k . a my g u e s t v i r t u a l network……），这里大致可以确定“these”指代“VN”，那么“ships in the night”的翻译就说不通了。
我在必应上输入ships in the night，找到了以下文本（https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ships_that_pass_in_the_night）：

我发现原来这是一个习语，现在意思也比较清晰了，那再来查查词典上具体的释义确认一下：（https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ships_that_pass_in_the_night）：ships that pass in the night (plural only)

至此，我可以确定“And these will be ships in the night”意思是指这三个VN 之间 没有联系，相互独立/ 隔离（参考词典第二条释义：have no significant connection），因此无法相互通信，和是否夜间运行没有关系。
疑问解决了，我们再来具体分析一下为什么会出现这个翻译问题：首先是技术视频的技术性、专业性比较强，本身理解起来就比较有难度。其次，技术视频不同于电视电影字幕，虽然内容上会有预先的构思，但是说话人都是即兴发言，说话内容本身的语法错误、脚本听写的错误，说话人的思维跳跃、声调、语气、停顿，以及屏幕内容显示的瞬时性等各种因素都会增加技术视频的翻译难度。
以上客观因素导致译者在翻译过程中对材料难以有宏观的掌握，无法确定说话内容的虚实。比如这里“in the night”是修辞手法还是实指？虽然这个句子本身结构简单，每个单词也都认识，但仍然会由于整体篇章上的不理解而影响对个别简单句子的翻译。像这样虽然某一句话看起来非常规范，但是整体篇章中让人乍看之下不知所云的句子很多，例如下面这几句：
Just because we're moving to a group-based ACLs, doesn't mean that you know whatever our network can connectivity we have today we can't achieve right?
That way you can map with Satish in San Jose is Engineering all allowed.
抛却这些客观因素，还有一个翻译难题在其他性质文件的翻译过程中也很常见——如果一个习语中每个单词都是认识的，译者通常可能不会想到这是一个特殊的表达，便会试图按照每个单词的常规意义来猜测其含义。我自己就曾犯过同样的错误，对某个表达百思不得其解，直到最后才恍然大悟原来是有特定含义的习语。
因此，做技术视频最理想的情况是，译者熟悉相应技术领域，能够从语法不够规范、干扰信息较多的文本中，读出说话人的真正意图并提供准确的译文。在技术知识不够的情况下，译者尤其需要结合视频脚本和屏幕显示，兼顾说话人的神情语气等各种因素，前后求证，确保译文准确，符合逻辑。如果遇到通过各种方式都无法解决的问题，则需要通过答疑确认。
